I'm trying to grow my hair long but it's taking forever. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? I can't bear this in-between look!
Adam Reed, Creative Manager answers:
I'm afraid there is no magic answer to make your hair grow faster. The average growth rate is just 6 inches a year, and no pills or potions will speed it up. However, there is still a lot you can do to help your hair grow healthy and strong.
Just because you want longer hair, it doesn't mean you should hide from the scissors for the next year. Continue to visit your hairdresser every 8-10 weeks for a trim on the ends. Your hairdresser can also help with that 'in-between' look, adding a little subtle shaping to keep the style as the hair grows.
Good nutrition is vital to healthy hair growth. A balanced diet will lead to luscious shining locks. B vitamins, folic acid and beta-carotene have been found to be particularly beneficial to hair follicles. A protein-rich diet can stimulate hair growth, while a lack of protein may lead to thinning or a slowing down of the growth cycle. Include fish, eggs, beans and yoghurt into your diet, and watch your hair flourish.
Avoid stress if you can. Excessive stress can retard hair growth, and even lead to hair loss. Get as much sleep as possible to allow your body to regenerate, and exercise regularly to improve circulation. Cut back on bad habits such as smoking and caffeine. These stimulants weaken the body and block nutrients and blood flow reaching the hair follicles.
It's important to look after your hair while it's growing. Treat it kindly and it will reward you. Choose a gentle shampoo to avoid stripping the natural oils - I would recommend Moisture Seal from the Results range. Pamper your hair with a weekly deep conditioning treatment, giving yourself a scalp massage to stimulate the hair follicles. Avoid hot water, steam or saunas which may stress the hair and rob it of moisture. Brush it gently and infrequently to prevent unnecessary breakage.
Finally, the real trick to achieving long hair is patience. Don't go for the chop if you get bored. Try a different parting, a new hair accessory or ask for hairdresser for some styling tips. It will be worth it!
