I want to buy a hairbrush to help me create a variety of different styles. There are so many shapes and sizes to choose from - what are they all for?
Mathew Soobroy, Master Stylist answers:
All hairbrushes are not created equal. Some are good for brushing, some for styling, some for long hair. The most common mistake people make is trying to create a new style with the wrong brush. Here's the low-down on hairbrushes to help you make the right choice:
Paddle Brush - a flat, wide brush for getting tangles out of long hair and creating sleek styles. Don't use it on layers, as it smoothes out the natural volume.
Vent Brush - a flat, vented brush that works like straightening irons when used with a hairdryer. It smoothes and straightens the hair, giving a silky finish.
Cushion Brush - great for mid-length styles that are naturally straight and sleek. Perfect for graduated cuts where you need a defined finish to the ends.
Sculpting Brush - a small brush for shorter styles with texture. Use it for backcombing, to add volume and to create irregular outlines.
Small Round Brush - acts like a roller when used with a hairdryer. Some have a thermal metal core which heats up with the hairdryer and sets the curl.
Large Round Brush - a larger brush that smoothes the hair shaft and adds body rather than curl. A thermal metal core will help to lock in the shape.
Before you start shopping, don't forget the two golden rules. Firstly, a hairbrush is an investment purchase. Don't go for the cheapest option. A quality brush will last for years and will protect rather than damage your hair. Secondly, clean your hairbrush regularly. Oil, dirt and styling products build up on the brush and hinder performance. A soak in a dilution of hair shampoo will get it clean and ready for action.
